Al Franken Concerned Privacy Issues of Facial Recognition FRANKEN ‘CHEWING AND MULLING’ ON FACIAL RECOGNITION — That’s the senator’s response when asked after a hearing on the technology Wednesday if he’s preparing legislation. Franken told reporters he has ‘no plans right now, as I think there’s some chewing and mulling before there will be any legislation.’ Franken noted it was the first such hearing the panel has ever had on facial recognition. Franken told us a key takeaway is a debate over what, exactly, consumers expect on privacy. ‘You heard that peoples’ expectations now are different because of social media, but then on the other hand, it’s not really quite clear peoples’ expectations are that different.’ And Franken said getting to the root of that is important, given that earlier limits on wiretapping by the Supreme Court grew out of this idea of expectations.
